Watch Your Mouth!
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Ephesians 4:29, NKJV
Did your mother ever tell you; “If you can’t say something good about someone, don’t say anything?”
We should all have listened more to what our mothers told us. Or maybe we should say; we should all do what our mothers told us.
Sometimes it would have been far better if we were to just keep our mouth shut. Sometimes our worst problem has been started with our own mouth. James said the tongue was an “unruly evil”.
Our scripture for today commands us that we need to guard our mouths and let no communication come out of them that is corrupt. It goes on to tell us that what does come out of our mouth should build others up and not tear anyone down.
Words are like toothpaste in that you can never put toothpaste back into the tube you just squeezed it out of. When you say it you will have to own it for a long time, maybe forever.
The last thing it tells us to do is to let our words give grace to those who hear them. Silence is truly golden if our words are hurtful to others.
Many times the Bible gives us a challenge and this verse is certainly a challenge for all of us. Let’s be sure we guard our tongues and may they speak only grace to and about others. Is this easy? No but rarely is living for Christ easy.
